Could also be a bad oil pump that isn't producing enough oil pressure at idle.

Ill forego an oil recommendation but I will say that 20w50 is thick.

Just one of many scenarios I'm afraid. Could be cam bearings, piston slap, rocker arms, sticky lifter, liner movement, etc. Etc. Unfortunately several of these sound very similar to each other.
Yep, could be several things, doesn't sound like piston slap though.
Oil pan gasket will be done too. Can't tell if it's leaking or not (too much oil from ps pump and valve covers), but pan gasket is sticking out in a couple spots. I had read to check the pick up screen.

Ticking starts after it warms up, none on cold start.
Now it ticks almost all the time, at all rpms, but occasionally stops for a few minutes, then it's back.
Yeah 20w50 is thick, bandaid thick, and doesn't seem to help. I will switch to Rotella 15w40 when I change the oil.
