Quick question guys... On a 2003 Disco II, do you have to set the preload? Does it only apply to pre 2002 models? Thanks for you help, my turn to have fun....

Default Did anyone answer Bullhorn's question?

I have a 2004 disco with 82,000 miles that has the EXACT same problem (ticking at idle only when warm, etc. exactly as he described). The dealer is telling me that sound is co I g from the lower part of the engine and likely piston seals or a crank, and either way the eventualality is going to be sell the truck or replace e engine with a new short block. Does anyone else have this experience and know exactly what it is?

One possibility is that the piston skirts are compressed. Contrary to what he says below, the liners in a DII can move enough to make noise - this much has been seen. They don't move MUCH, but they can move enough to leave a circular mark on the head.

One dealer actually got the motor hot and heard it rap, at which time he sprayed the side of the block with a hose and the rap went away. He told the customer that was evidence of liner movement.

Actually, it wasn’t. These photos make it pretty clear that late model liners have nowhere to move. The hose test simply showed that the noise went away when the engine block was cooled – in other words, the noise was triggered by thermal expansion.

Steve and I sorted that noise question out on another engine a few months back. On that motor – which had exactly the same hot rap – we found the piston skirts had collapsed in about ten thousandths of an inch. That was enough to make them rock when they got hot, and they rapped good and loud.

On that engine we expanded the piston skirts and refitted the pistons. No more rap.

Default Thanks and more info

I have been researching this. I was told by the dealer that it was a slipped sleeve and that I needed a new block. I have found on the web that this happens to engines that have overheated, and mine did about 2 years ago when I blew a head gasket at 58,000 miles. I have been told that there is a youtube video of a guy heating an engine to 210 degrees on a BBQ and that he can pull the sleeve in and out with BBQ tongs (although I can't find it). I did find this useful video on how to diagnose the problem, reaching the same conclusion that long term the block is toast - YouTube - ‪Slipped Sleeve Syndrome‬‏

So for now I will drive it - can't do too much more harm I suppose if the block needs to be replaced. I am guessing that I can probably do so for quite some time without serious risk of failure, but please let me know if I am not seeing the issue correctly. Long term I will have to decide if I replace the truck or not. But I love my disco and have actually toyed with the idea of putting a TD5 in. Maybe that is not such a bad idea.
