my aux fan always runs. Want to replace radiator...
Hi Pros,
Any idea on a good replacement radiator for a Discovery II year 2001?
AUX fan always turns on when I come to a stop after going on the highway.
Guess I could try to bleed the system - Have not bleed it since March 2012.
But, probably a plugged radiator.
I have a Hayden Fan Clutch on order too...
Radiator is next..
And
http://ultragauge.com is OUT of stock.
I did just order this one.
Need it for the 1997 DI.
One-day shipping available
Time left: 1d 20h leftTomorrow, 6PM
$0.99

I just went through the same thing with my cooling fan running at idle even in cold temperatures here in Alberta, Canada. There are a couple other threads with info.
I have a new water pump, fan clutch, temp. checked out on the radiator from top to bottom, etc. No indications of a head gasket leak. I just changed my thermostat on Friday with a motorad 180 and now my cooling fan is not running.
I didn't suspect it was the t-stat as I just replaced it a year and a half ago but obviously it was!
Have you tried that yet?

Here is one problem area for D2 stats - of all ages, from 5 years to five minutes....
These tiny metering holes in the top leg allow hot coolant to mix with colder stuff from the lower hose of the radiator, warm it up, and open the stat to cool the block. If the holes are restricted by sludge/scale build up or trash from flushing, then the time to cycle the thermostat will be changed and motor will get hotter.

I failed to mention that a new cooler thermostat can "mask" a partially sludged radiator. When the lower rows of the rad fill up with gunk, not as much water flow, so it cools off quicker. Top area of fins will appear much warmer than lower rows, even though they are fed in parallel. About 10F top to bottom on fins is good, but a lot higher difference and you begin to wonder.

Guys,
Thanks for all the feedback! Wonderful
HI Savannah, which radiator replacement do you recommend for a 2001 D2 with SAI?
And, guys, thanks,
I'll get a 180 thermostat too.
Any good links to the new radiator and a good 180 degree T stat?
I got work to do..
I am going to head out and try to bleed it, but, that will not make a hoot of difference I am sure.

Interesting observation.
I had not bleed this 2001 Discovery II since March in 2012 in Boulder, CO.
I just gave it my dynamic bleed by raising the coolant tank and running the engine at 1,100 RPM
for 10 minutes..
Low and behold - the aux fan is not coming on now when I get off of the highway and go into a parking lot.
I don't like this..
Maybe I am sucking air via the screws which have cracked the corners of the radiator which hold on the plastic guard on the top of the rad.

jfall, I have a Genesis radiator, it's done me well so far as well.
At $126, you really can't beat the price.
