My first time transmission fluid/filter change-----tips and advice needed!

The bolts should not be rusted. Are you using the torx? The first time I did mine, the drain plug broke. Take off the top fill hole first and make sure that comes out before you drain and can't refill. I can't remember why mine broke, but I think it had something to do with a washer not being there maybe. Use a torque wrench and do them right.
Also, you will need a hand pup for fluid. I got mine at Advance Auto for like ten bucks. You can screw it right onto the qt or gallon bottle and pump away. It is impossible to fill without something like that. The trucks need to be running and gears shifted thru. It would help to have all wheels on ramps a few extra inches to work with. The exhaust gets hot quick. Also, chock the wheels front and rear and have a friend help shift thru the gears.
Get the gallon of fluid as it is much easier to keep pumping from. If you are using the Lucas, mix it well into the regular fluid. It is very thick and will jam up the hand pump.

Would you believe...I got under the truck to do the tranny fluid and filter....all bolts rusted solid. The local Rover guy said well, after the first 30K they should change the fluid and filter but after that YOU SHOULD NEVER CHANGE THE FILTER! Amazing. He also said he won't work on uit if the bolts ar rusted on solid because then if one breaks you'll need a new tranny.
Just thought I should post it.......

Thats total BS
I just changed mine yesterday. 01, Disco
There are six 10 mm bolts that are attached to little aluminum spacers
Put a little penetrating oil on the bolts if they are rusty
Remove the drain plug 5mm allen
Drain the fluid
Remove the six 10mm bolts only one is a little hard to get
Take a rag and clean the metal shavings off the magnet
Wipe out the pan
Put the drain plug back in
Pour a bottle of that Lucas Trans Additive directly in the pan
Remove the 3 tork screws holding the filter on to the valve body
Be mindfull of the "o rings" (dont forget to replace both)
Transfer the "snorkel" (plastic pick up pipe) to the new filter.
Put the new gasket on the pan
Put the pan back on to the valve body
Make sure the gasket isnt twisted by visually inspecting the perimeter
Pump in a coulpe more quarts of Dexron 3 Atf in the filler hole
Start the vehicle (make sure it's level)
Hold your foot on the brake and run it through all gears a couple of times
Leave it running in Park
Get underneath and keep pumping in the ATF until its starts flowing out the filler hole.
Quick put the filler plug in and torque it to fifteen lbs
Spray the whole thing off with brake cleaner
Watch it for a while with the motor running checking for leaks
Your done
On a scale of one to ten regarding difficulty this job is a 2
The most important thing is that motor has to be running and hot when you finish topping it off.
