My Ticking Disco Problem - SOLVED
what year D2 was this? I have a ticking noise but when it's cold no noise when the truck gets warmer is when it starts and only does at Idle, sometimes louder than others and as soon as I rev engine up a bit past say 1500 it goes away. I'm a auto tech and I will put it on the lift today and try to inspect without taking down the pan. On a lot of Domestic cars I have seen this, I just do not work on many Land Rovers until owning mine.
also mine just hit 65000 miles been doing it for about 4000 miles now

Forgot to mention that I initially had the same symptoms. It would be quite at cold idle then after warming up the noise would start. As time progressed and flex plate weakened the noise was there all the time.
I too have this problem. I have a 03 DII.Sounds like a lifter. No Noise when cold but when heats up makes the tapping noise. Gonna drive it in to work tomorrow and check it out. I hope this is my problem as well.
FYI - I have have the same tick that only happens when warm and goes away above 1,500 RPM. I took off the inspection plate on the bell housing and you can't see anyting. You can only see the torque converter and the very edge of the flex plate. Looks like the only surefire diagnosis is to take off the oil pan.
I'm going to look for a write-up for removing the pan and tackle that next weekend. I have high hopes this is it, but removing the trans without knowing for sure would be a ton of work. I was also quoted $700 from a trans shop - I provide the flex plate. And $900 from a Land Rover specialist. I'm in a metro area, so labor rates are a little high. All were quoting 7.5 hrs.

you should find the write up for removing the oil pan is in the rave. but if i remember correctly you need to remove the front crossmember (8-bolts), then remove the 14 bolts in the pan it's that simple, the tranny lines will push out of the way.
True, make sure to also use a new oil pan gasket. F.Y.I. some say it a PIA to reseal the oil. Make sure to use an RTV sealant as the RAVE suggests.
So we have 2 people confirmed this was there problem? Anyone else check this and find it cracked? I checked mine but I could not see anything without taking oil pan or trans out and I have not had time to do anything else.

I have the EXACT same issue!!

Doesn't sound like the same solution as the flex plate, if his did it all the time. Mine only does it after warming up.
It could be the liners moving then. It is really no big deal unless there is a crack behind the liner. those things can tick up and down with no ill effect for ever. There is a lip at the bottom so unlike the D1 the liner can not drop down too low and destroy engine.
