Did the head gaskets on my wife's disco ii. I was fairly meticulous and shot photos of everything I removed, etc. Got the upper intake manifold on and noticed this little friend dangling. It's located directly behind the driver side head and it has a very short leash on it. Not for the coil packs or evap stuff. We recently purchased this Disco and it's had some heavy work on it from previous owners and I can't find it in any of my dismantling photos, which leads me to think it was lingering back there already...

Any idea what it goes to?

 

Looks like crank position sensor.

 

Yep. With that location and the unique connector, pretty much guarantee Alex is right.
