Need advice buying a Disco 1
Hello- Brand new to this board, second one I joined trying toget advice.I found a Disco 1 for sale and need advice on if I should Purchase. It's a 97 with 83,000 miles. No dents or rust, some scratches. Asking price is $4995. Everything works, except the power switch for the driver seat. The ABS light came on when I put the key on and tested the switches, but came off after a test drive. After the test drive, I noticed what seemed to be oil covering the right side, behind the bumper and the oil pan was a bit wet. There were no oil stains on the ground where it was parked. During the drive, the trans seemed a little jerky. I don't know if this is normal. Inspection is guaranteed. Comes with a 6 month warranty. Extended 2 year drivetrain warranty is $1100, full coverage is $1900. It's been at the lot for at least 3 months. Blue book value for excellent condition is $8800. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks - Jim[/align]

I called the dealer to see if I could bring it to my mechanic, who is 20-25 miles away and they said no, their dealer plates aren't good that far?!? Does that sound right? I really want a Disco and the price is right. Maybe I will see if it sits another month and offer them 4K. Thanks Mike- Jim
I got a 97 that was trashed. I had to rebuild the front end, brakes, bushings all around, various body and interioir parts. Anyway, I have about $4k total in the car now and she is getting close to perfect. Runs like a top now. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anyhting.
That said, repairs can get very expensive very quickly. I have done all of the work myself (except welding in the new cats) and have used used parts when I can. Send Mike your # and talk to him. He will tell you what to look for exactly. The oil could be a bad seal on the swivel pin housing, or something a lot more severe. My tranny does not jerk at all. Watch for clunks a little is ok, but they can mean bad news.
if there is no mileage limits on the drivetrain warranty, I would get it. READ it closely. The mechanic thing sounds fishy to me. I have several friends that are dealers, and I have never heard of that. Either they don't want you taking it that far away, or they don't want you checking it out. Prices are dropping all over with gas going up. Expect around 13 in town and 18 on the highway. There are things you can do to up your mileage, but not much.
Good Luck!

I don't know what there problem is, other than they are your stereo-typicalItalian, meathead jersey asses (I'm italian and from NJ, so it's ok if I say it). They have no complaints with the Better Business Buerau, ebay feedback is perfect at 240 positives (they sell cars). I just don't get it. I'm not in a big rush, just new toy syndrome. I'll give it a few weeks, then jump or run. thanks again. -Jim
