Ok guys,
I don't want to start a war or ruffle any feathers out there(I'm sure i will by this post and I apologize in advance). I've had my disco for a bit over 3 months now and been redoing it and trying to make it a fun ride to take out in the woods and still go back and forth to work if needed. I have owned disco's before(college days) and never seen the arguments about oil as there is on here. I'm currently running Dino 10w-40 and I'm in the process of a top end rebuild. I see a lot of post to use rotella 15w-40. I want some good advice....pros and cons....for it or royal purple hps 10w-40. Fill me in guys

 

The Diesel engine motor oils 15w-40 for the cleaning properties and "zinc package." Flat tappet engines require higher zinc numbers for health of the camshaft lobes. Lots use Rotella but it has been Reformulated just recently. Thicker viscosity for the oil pump assembly and keeping the oil pressure up. I was sniffing around on bobistheoilguy.com or something like that and searching the analysis on all different motor oils. Still need to check back on the VOA of the new Rotella.

 

Well that's what I was thinking but I figured a lot would chirp in and give me some good explanations. Thanks for the head up. I need to find some to help clean the internals pretty good. I'm doing a head job right now and you can tell that the previous owner frequented jiffy lube but to dark color on the internals. Any recommendations on what to use to help rid of deposits? I cleaned everything I could. As soon as I get it out all back together, it's gonna get the exterior of the engine degreased.

 

Looks like you are all doing all the good. Could be nobody is saying anything because there are about 1,000 threads on here talking about the Dino Rotella 15/40. It's just the go-to and works great for cleaning the engine. If you did a search you may find "after" pics of Rotella use where some1 replaced HG with pics or VC removed showing valve train. Not sure but I've seen proof somewhere. I use Rotella & removing my VCs after a couple rounds running Rotella & I didn't have to clean anything; it was all spotless under there. Rotella is the only thing I have used but I also add 1-qt Lucas HD stabilizer in oil change if it's warm out and it has worked for nearly 2-yr and 15k miles. Sorry that my explanation wasn't good enough for you. Hopefully one of your peers will give you the information that you are looking for.

 

Great info and looks like I'll get onboard then. A whole forum of disco owners couldn't be wrong!! Glad to know there is a good base of great folks that enjoy helping each other with their "toys." My wife has already designed her new 2017 discovery. Maybe she will let me have a bigger allowance for mine now!

 

I run regular Rotella 15-40 in my d2's and the synthetic Rotella in our turbo bmws. Fwiw, I was concerned running such thick oil on cold starts but it seems to start and run just as well as anything else and I'm confident knowing that it is a well suited oil for our engines. At 313k, it's not burning any oil and runs better than most engines with half the mileage

 

Well if that isn't a testament to what kind of quality oil it is for our engines, I don't know what is. Congrats on have such a high mileage disco. I was really worried about the higher weight in the climate I'm in.....central Alabama.

 

I'm not sure how cold it runs there, but i have been down into the 20's so far here in NY with perfect starts- no noise, no oil light on etc. It's supposed to get down to 8 degrees here on Thursday night, so even if I have nowhere to go I'll be sure to fire her up just to see.

 

Usually the lowest it gets is the low teens and that's maybe once to twice a year but gets up to 105 max in the summer
