Default New codes: P0455 and P0161

Hey guys --

Well, just when things were starting to get boring and uninteresting I was welcomed with the good 'ol SES light. I pulled the codes and did the usual search through the forum, but interestingly didn't find anyone with these two combinations. P0455 relates to evap large leak and P0161 relates to O2 sensor.

I triple-checked the gas cap, and that hasn't cleared the code yet. The truck runs absolutely fine, gas mileage has been as usual so far and exhaust pipe isn't blowing out any soot.

I noticed DiscoMike mentioned that the common source of P0455 was the purge valve. Since this costs about the same as a smoke test, should I just start with replacing the purge valve and see if that fixes it?

Any ideas as to why it's also triggering the P0161 (O2 sensor) fault? I put in new sensors <1 year ago.

As always, thanks for your advice and help!

The P0445 (if it was the gas cap loose) will have to go through several drive cycles to clear. Which O2 sensors did you replace within the past year? All 4 or just the upstreams? If you replaced all four at the same time, it could *maybe* be defective, but my guess would either be a wiring problem, or a converter going out.

Morpheus --

I replaced all 4 with OEM sensors I ordered from AB (or Rovers North... can't remember now).

I'll pile on a few more miles and see if the SES doesn't clear, and if not check codes to see if at least the P0455 does.

Thanks,
Ed

First, I never said a 455 is a bad purge valve, it is what has been mentioned a gross evap leak.
That 161 is a bank 2 sensor 2 heater system failure in the 02. At your mileage, I would replace them all so you have a balanced air/fuel ratio.

Mike / all --

Sorry about that -- I didn't mean to misquote previous information. I thought I had read a post about P0455, and that a common issue related to it is a malfunctioning purge valve. I'll try to look for the post again to read the info. more closely.

As for my O2 sensor code, I recently (<1 year) replaced all 4 O2 sensors with brand new/OEM ones. Is it common for one to fail prematurely? I am guessing that maybe this code is related to what is causing the P0455, since I've been running SES-free for about 6 months...?

Thanks for your ideas and thoughts.
