Default New D2 (4.6L V8) in family, needs a new exhaust? And plenty of TLC.

Hi all.

Just got a 2004 4.6L V8 D2 to accompany my 2003 TD5 and I need to get a new exhaust for it.
... among other issues like cyl 6 misfire and always on rear brake lights and non working rear fog lights.

It's a 4A866416 and I need the cats for MOT emissions here in Finland.

There seems to be many many different Y pipes with the cats for different market areas etc.
What the real differences? Are they different size etc or something?

And then the center muffler/delete and the rear pipe with muffler. Are they the same with TD5?

Thanks in advance!

Nice looking rig! My '04 is very similar. I haven't gone to the step of replacing my factory cats or exhaust on either my '03 or '04, but I have seen some comments from other users that some of the aftermarket cats do not have as much heat shielding as the factory cats so you'll want to grease the front driveshaft on very regular intervals to avoid heat damage.

Thanks for the compliment

And thanks for pointing out the heatshield issue!
Greasing the driveshafts should be no issue and this D2 won't be a daily, more of a sunday driver mainly on the road.

IF i looked right on the https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/
I need for the front WCD000443
https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...st-system.html
A LOT of possibilities restricted by VIN's.

Craddock has WCD001220 for ~220 GBP that parts.jlr lists for AUS/CDN/MEX/USA,J,4.0L V8 EFI Petrol,Euro Consolidated Directive 3,With Catalyst FROM VIN 1A741537, FROM VIN 1A741537 - TO VIN 2A782035, TO VIN 2A782035
https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...st-system.html

I suppose there is no exhaust difference between 4.0 and 4.6 as they don't even list the 4.6 there on the exhaust section.

Tailpipe is the same with TD5 WDE100652 -> WDE100660
Center pipe is not, it's WDE104640 -> WDE104642

The exhaust is not completely shot, but previous owners have done enough botch repairs on it so we want to get a completely new one.
....and make it sound better. Not gonna sound like my 91 mustang wit long headers, x pipe and slp loudmouth, but better than stock perhaps.

This is just one spot

magnaflow makes one in stainless (cat back) .

Repair your 'Y' pipe a bit better if keeping the OEM cats?

........or get the magnaflow cats n Y pipe.....

or have a shop build one in stainless.....and you choose the muffler and pipe diameter...for sound....flow will not change too much as the cast headers and intake are restrictive...

I did get the magnaflow cats n Y pipe, but disappointed in quality and fit...and the price has gone up....

On my P38 I have the stock Y-pipe and Cats and a Magnaflow muffler downstream. It probably doesn’t sound like your Mustang, but it sounds pretty good.

Gotta see about those Magnaflows, how I could get those here in Finland.
No retailer is going to have thos readily avail here, so tenuous niche here, for land rovers in general also.

Shipping from the US is going to be a "bit" steep. Well, the y pipe with cats seems to be ~grand so umm..

And yeah, I'm planning on replacing the whole y pipe with the cats, at some point.
I looked at the nice work done on the y pipe better yesterday and it seems that the cat has been replaced at some point, the other one seemed original.

Just ordered a bunch of filters, new coils and leads, K&N airfilter, 2 new keys.
Need to grab exhaust gaskets and draglinks also.

I changed the oil on saturday, added some liqui moly hydraulic lifter additive to it as there is some ticking present.
I'm a bit scared its slipping sleeves, but yesterday I had it idle to temp and it maybe getting quieter..
Surely I need new exhaust gaskets nevertheless as some of them are leaking.

Today, diff and transfer box oils. And check the brake light switch, as the brake lights are on as soon as the ignition is on.
Need to take it to a shop later on to flush the transmission oil as soon as I get it road worthy.

So far I've asked/looked WCD000443 from:
Craddock -> 2200 euros plus taxes and shipping.
LR Parts -> 2100 euros plus shipping and taxes.
Paddock -> 2200 euros plus shipping.

According to the prices, they seem to be genuine ones. I can accept aftermarket ones.

I see those, maybe aftermarket ones, on Ebay for that ~1100 eur delivered with taxes.

Also asked from Rimmerbros if they know whats the difference, but they did not.
Although they do have bundles that include front, middle and rear pieces that they say will fit all V8's. They did not comment on this at all.

I think I need to take a gamble and order the WCD001220 from somewhere. It's only ~300 euros.
I might win ~700+ euros or lose ~300 euros....

And on to other things.

Got the diff and transfer box oils changed.
Did not look too bad. Rear diff had some shavings on the magnet, but not too bad.

Topped up coolant and went on a first test drive. So far we have driven it only on and off the trailer and turned around on our yard.

So, the excess noises it makes.
I'm turning away from slipping sleeves and leaning towards the misfire banging in the exhaust...
A short clip, for the sound. Do note that there is some pure exhaust leak sound also.

It's not really about rpm or how hard I hit the pedal and it's not constant. Just every now and then.
Hope I get the leads and coils by the end of the week.
