New disco owner questions /fuel pump issue
New disco owner here.
2002 Disco SE 81k miles
Dealership said the fuel pump valve was bad.
It cold starts fine.
But after driving it, it needs three turns of the key before it starts.
How easy is it to replace the fuel pump?
The RAVE seems ok but assumes someone knows things already.
Where should I get the pump?
Anyone on here live around Spokane,WA ?
Know any good mechanics around here?
I like learning and fixing things myself but need a lot of guidance sometimes.
Anything weird I should know when changing the oil?
Or is it a standard oil change ? Rotella 15w40 and filter and air filter.
How many quarts?
How hard is the drive shaft rebuild? Apparently that is a huge must do on this forum.
Thanks!

see Propshaft Rebuild - Land Rover Forums - Land Rover Enthusiast Forum to decide if you can do it or take to driveline shop.
A standard oil change is "oil" and "filter", about 7 quarts of Rotella, and jumbo filter of choice. Do this every 3,000 - 5,000 miles.
Fuel Pump for Land Rover Discovery 2 V8 - WFX101060, WFX101070 - 2002
But you may want to look into a fuel pressure test. Test valve is hard to get at, many remove the upper plenum to do this. At that point, it becomes quite easy to put in new plug wires.
Since pump is in the tank, not sure how it could warm up and cause problems. But there is a device that warms up and can eventually make no start at all. The crank position sensor. Perhaps carry a spark plug with you, and next time this happens, move a plug wire to the spare plug, lay on manifold, and crank. No sparks = crank position sensor.
You may also want to visit a "u-pull-da-parts junkyard, where you learn on some one else's old carcass. Fuel pumps are like $35.

Fuel pump is easy.
Open cargo door.
Remove carpet trim.
Roll up carpet.
Open access panel.
Remove fuel lines.
Remove retaining ring.
Lift out fuel pump.
Make sure you also get a new retaining ring seal with the new fuel pump.

It's been happening for the past year.
The dealership said it was a valve of some sort in the fuel pump.
I thought maybe it could be a sensor but that would mean the dealership diagnosed it incorrectly. What are the chances for them to misdiagnose?
Not only one time they diagnosed it as such but twice now. According to the previous owner.
What is a reasonable price to have a drive line shop rebuild the prop shaft? I would of course order the parts from advanced auto myself.
You can't typically get your car diagnosed for free can you?
If it is the crank shaft sensor, how easy is that job?
There is a european auto place where I live that would do the pump for like 550. Even the import places where I live hate rovers .
Wish I could find some other rover people around here.

Dude, seriously, replace the fuel pump yourself.
It is not a hard job, basic hand tools is all you need.
If you cant or wont then $550 is not a bad price.
Land Rover Parts, Accessories and Information
$250 for the driveshaft rebuild, let them supply all the parts, you wont save much money if you bring them the parts.
The crank shaft sensor is harder to replace than the fuel pump.
It is cheaper though.
I doubt the dealership diagnosed it wrong, it can happen, but not usually.

However I need some direction as to if I need the one with air induction or without?
I think I will let the shop do the shaft though.
Cheers!

Well at Land Rover Parts & Rover Accessories From Atlantic British | Discovery, Range Rover, LR3, LR2, Defender, Freelander and Land Rover Series Parts & Accessories if you look up fuel pumps for the DII they give you the VIN# range that you need.
The fuel pump does not care if you have secondary air injection (SAI) or not.
But just so you know, here is how you find out.

I would also let the shop do the shaft. hehe...shaft...
