Fair enough.

That said, the first step is to identify if the shaft has been rebuilt. The OEM u-joints are non-serviceable, so if there are grease fittings on the joints, the shaft has been rebuilt.

Personally, I'd probly rebuild it again just to be sure because people tend to not replace the centering ball and replacing transmissions sucks. But if I knew if had been rebuilt, I'd let it slip down the priority list a bit.

Well I was able to get the truck on the lift today, and Dr. Mordo, the front driveshaft have a grease nipple on it so it has been replaced at some point, but the rear didn't appear to have been replaced. Upon getting a closer inspection, the front shaft have noticeable play in it which tells me it is pretty much worn out, so both are getting replaced.

The brakes are done and are no longer spongy, and I can actually stop now when I press on the brakes which is a good thing. I have a new S belt and I replaced a idler pulley. Are there any more things anyone recommend I go over? I think I have pretty much covered all the items on the Maintenance schedule in the sticky section, but just thought I would ask anyway.

I will soon be in the market for a front bumper because mine is busted, and I really don't want that plastic bumper that came on it. Can someone recommend some websites that I can look at some aftermarket parts for the Disco II? I want something heavy duty because all the deer in my area, that plastic bumper won't last a month.

Thanks again for all the helpful replies,

Kat

Don't forget to replace the centering ball in the front shaft. It's a PITA, but necessary.

I'm a fan of the Jeep bumper, but others think it's ugly.

The one thing I'd prioritize is the cooling system. These trucks tend to blow head gaskets at an alarming rate.

1. 180 deg thermostat (don't buy the cheapo thermo, they have known issues)
2. Flush and replace with green coolant, don't forget to bleed the system. Personally, I dumped the coolant, ran dishwasher detergent and water thru mine for a week before filling with 50/50 green coolant/water. These days, I'd do some research into Trisodium Phosphate and possibly run it instead. You can get it at a hardware store.
3. Replace hoses as needed.

Another thing you may want to do is buy a crankshaft position sensor and review the replacement procedure for when it inevitably fails and leaves you stranded.

Fallstaff, I am really loving that bumper, thanks for the link.

Dr. Mordo, I don't think that bumper is ugly at all, just a bit more than what I am going for. One thing for sure, that bumper will protect me from anything in my way.

I passed on the driveshaft rebuild to another technician but I did instruct him to replace the centering ball. I will stop by the shop to check on him during the week, because they are notorious for doing what they want as oppose to what you tell them. I will also check it out before it goes back on the truck.

I did flush and fill the coolant with the green as recommend in the Sticky "Major Service", however I didn't go with the 180 degree thermostat, so I will correct that. I did have to replace one hose that appeared to have a pin hole in it, but the rest were okay.

I just read another thread were the Owner was having cranking issues and the problem was the CPS so that too is on my list to buy.

Right now the truck is at my uncles shop and not being driven until every component has been serviced. I got it dirt cheap at auction so I want to make sure it is running at peak performance before I put it to the test. I am now off to order more parts, and I will update this post next Sunday.

Have a enjoyable week everyone!
Kat
