Default New Key/remote, Dealer Or local shop

I bought my Disco with out the alarm remote and it really has not been a big deal, but lately it has been a little more difficult to find that sweet spot for the key to turn in the door. I have not been left locked out of the car or anything and that is what I am trying to avoid. I called Bluff City Land Rover here in Memphis and parts quoted be $198 for a new remote, he then transfered me to service because he said he was not sure if there was a charge to program the key ( total bs ). Of course there is a charge, they want entire hours labor which runs $120.95. Has anyone found a cheaper way to do this? Bluff City is the only dealer in town and they have me by the, well you know.

Sometimes you can find the right FOB on E-Bay, make sure if you buy one there that it comes with the access card with the FOB's number so you can then set it up to work on your truck.
Prices can run from $50 and up plus what ever a dealer or Rover shop might charge to activate it with the proper scanner. You will then need to get a key cut for it using the key code you'll need to get from Rover.

Ok, so make sure I get one with an access card. Got it. Does anyone know of any Rover shops in the Memphis area? I have been hard pressed to find one.

Here is what has been happening with remotes bought of off e-bay.
The dealer will program it for $120.
It MUST have the bar code inside the remote, without the bar code to THAT remote it is useless.
The dealer will sell you a remote and program it for free.
98% of the time they programmed it for free if you bought it from them.

As for the key hole on the door, lube it.
In your owners manual it tells you to lube every lock, hinge, latch, everything that moves with silicone spray every 6 months.
Lube your door lock and latch and it will no longer stick.

So you think if I go to the dealer and buy a remote that they will program it with no extra charge even though they said it would be a full hours labor?? I guess if they did try to charge me I could return it on the spot!

worst case scenario...

you buy one on eBay, spend $120.00 it doesn't work, you can't return it.

dealership you spend $240.00 it works. you've got what you wanted.

or... you may be pleasantly surprised, and only spend the $120.00 for the remote at the dealership, and they program it for free.

also, you have started to establish a relationship with the dealer. which is good, should you need something else small etc.
