RE: New to the Land Rover Scene. Help!
A MUST for any new Land Rover owners is...The Gods Must be Crazy. Rent it, buy it, whatever you have to do, you MUST watch that movie. It is a cult classic amungst LR owners. And yes, I do own a copy and no you may not borrow it. [sm=icon_cheers.gif]

Check out K&N's site on this issue. They are aware of these claims and took the time to see if there is any truth to it. It is worth reading.
Cheers,
Pete

RE: New to the Land Rover Scene. Help!
Ok, here is my personal experiance on a K&N air filter. I installed one on the 2001 Mitsubishi Montero that I had bought brand new. $65 for the filter, $15 for the re-oil kit. No increase in MPG. Non. No more power, nothing. A total waste of money. At $20 each for a standard paper air filter it would have taken me 4 yrs and 100,000 miles to pay what I paid for the K&N air filter. Did I mention I got no increase in MPG?

RE: New to the Land Rover Scene. Help!
Have not tried a K&N filter on my Discovery yet but have run them in all my other vehicles with no problem. Some of my vehicles I noticed a difference, others I didn't. Normally a lower power engine, such as the Rover 4.0, have had the most noticeable increases. My Dodge Hemi has enough power that the little increase from the filter isn't noticeable.

RE: New to the Land Rover Scene. Help!
A personal experience with another vehicle does not warrant condemning K&N filters. Of the several Japanese cars I have owned each one saw an increase in gas mileage and power with the addition of the filter. A 2.5 ton SUV with what amounts to a highly refined Buick engine is probably not going to show a seat-of-the-pants increase in power or a meaningful increase in gas mileage.
Relating the the MAF issue, the culprit for failed MAF's is poor construction, not the oil on the K&N filters. I could offer more personal experience, but I am convinced by the testing K&N has done on several vehicles claiming failure due to their filters.
Enjoy,
Pete

Pete-I am glad that it works for you. I agree that the DII MAF is weak. But I stand in my opinion that K&N air and oil filters for that matter are overpriced and not any better than any other filter.
Thisis almost a free country and we can each do as we see fit.
