new owner obtaining maintenance / service records
So I just bought an '04 Discovery w/ 60k from a dealer in Orange County and he let me peek at some maintenance records from the PO but claimed he could not give them to me as it is a breach of privacy and against the law. Anyone else have this experience? I wonder if it's a state law here in Califonia or maybe a federal law? Fortunatley the PO had serviced it at LR dealerships in Rancho Mirage and Newport Beach. I proceeded to call LR headquarters in the US who told me that they too could not give me records but they could tell me any and all LR dealerships where service was performed. They also could tell me if any recall work was done (software upgrade at 44k.) Beyond that nothing else and they suggested I call the individual dealerships to see if they might release records.
Rancho Mirage said they would as long as I faxed over current proof of ownership, then they will fax me back their computer version of service records (w/ out the PO contact info of course.) Newport Beach was a little different- apparently you must show up in person with the vehicle.
I guess its nice that LR will do this service at all, but I think it's too bad that there isn't a little more consistency. For the premium that LR charges for its vehicles you might think that LR headquarters might offer this service for all pre-owned buyers? Doesn't Mercedes do that?

With all of the identity theft out there, people are a little hesitant to give out info. I got some records with mine, and there was an old credit card slip with the guys imprint on it. I had the card #, name address and telephone# all in the same stack. I shredded that one.
Actually I got lucky. The independent dealer neglected to pitch me on the fact that the PO just had the 60k service done at the Newport Beach dealership, along with some other things I now forget- all totaling $1800 or so (thank the $50 per half-rate LRignition wires!) Also had the brakes done at 55k or so- a $1200 bill from same dealership.
Strange thing is the truck still has a slight misfire at idle. I wonder is this just unavoidale in a V8? I still have get to get a read on MPG but as long as its better than the mere 225 miles I could barley squeeze out of my '99 D2 w/ 120k- I'll be happy. It would be nice to get 290 miles or so out of this one- that is is if actually gets its rated 12 mpg city.
Also today the damn three amigosproblemjumped out andgave me their warm welcome tomy new LR. I hated this problem in my older D2. Glancing at the service records I do remember the PO dealing with the problem under warranty at least two seperate times. IS this problem just a curse to all Discovery's or what? I thought it acceptable in a truck with over 100k (dirty sensors?) but having the problem start happening only 15k into this ones life?? Thought to note here that my '99 would ring out TC/HDC/ABS where the new one sings TC/ABS/Brake. Does this indicate anything different than a faulty sensor?
Last thing- I noticed the turning radius seems much better in my new '04 over the older '99 D2. Was this one of the improvements for '03-'04? If so maybe someone should post a list of changes for those models and maybe include the D1 to D2 changes too?

sorry forgot to mention above: brakes done at the dealer less than 10k ago and already a squeak when cold. I wanted to ask- anyone heard of people adding shims made by Porsche to the brake shoes? Someone had told me this cures the almost factory built-in squeaky brakes of all LR's.
