Newbie!
I am moving back to western north Carolina after a some time in DC. Ill be running a BBQ joint and am looking forward to getting back to the mountains. So Ill be selling my 335 and looking to pick up a RR/LR. Ill have $9,000 to put towards the build. So looking for advice on which model would best suit my needs.
I have owned jeeps before. Built and wheeled a wrangler, J20, and cj5. So I am not a complete newbie, just to the British make. I imagine I can locate a decent disco I/II for $3-5k. Would like to run 33"-35" tires and be capable offroad. need a rack, winch and lift.
Point me in the right direction!

Hello, welcome.
Good expectations. D1 d2 have their trade offs
D1 more articulation and more off road ready but Most are higher miles and need more help.
D2 little more luxury and newer features
Rrc on par with d1 off road articulation capabilities w more room
Going to have to go three inches (with a possible trim) or more on the lift to stuff 35s in either. Gears and lockers, if you want to go that route will be your biggest price for mods.
For that info, I will be needing a comp pulled pork sandwich with extra sauce

Going more than 3" substantially increases the cost as there will be wires/lines that need extending, pinion angle change, etc. I'd be surprised if a 3" lift would allow 35s...I think 33s would be the limit there, so if you're content with that, you'll have more money for other things. DI will be easier to work on...fewer components too.
Search lift and tire sizes, also narrow by rim size. Something like "lift for 275/655r18" should do the trick. Or check this thread: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...re-lift-64591/ Bottom line is you need to familiarize yourself with basic lift/tire combos before jumping in. Justin at Lucky8, LLC, is a good guy to talk to.
33" is probably as big as you can go without major modifications. 32.5" is probably more realistic. Most DIIs you will find will have 18" rims. The S models have 16s. You have way more tire choices with the 16s. Plus, some DIIs up to 2002, and the 2004 models, have a factory center locking differential. Sounds like a 2004 S model would be your best bet.

3-5k will get you something decent. 9k will get you a nice capable platform. Motors are the biggest issues for the D2s but there are options for these as well. Reach out to Bill at RTE Fab in Charlotte (Tell him I sent you) he can hook you up with one of the best options for Discovery lift kits and bulletproofing. You may be able to find one that someone has done the rack and lift as there are tons on these available.
good luck
