Default Newbie and a Head Gasket Job

I have had my 03 Discovery for all of four days now and I am going to attempt to do the head gasket myself. I bought the car knowing it needed to be done. The job here in Roanoke VA at the dealer is 2200.00 and to me that is just crazy. I will likely see it as a bargain if and when I ever get through it. My simple question to all of you who are much more knowledgable about this than I is this: Are there websites, manuals or anything that could help me through this? Also are there any tools that I will need?
Thanks in advance,
Chris

do a search on head gasket jobs and you will have enough to read to keep you busy all weekend. Download the RAVE manual, you can find it on this site and linked to many posters signature blocks. Before you start, try to figure out it you have a dropped or leaking liner, could save you a ton of time, money and frustration. After reading up, get back with any specific questions. There is also a video that you can order that takes you through a head gasket job. Good luck. Phil

What do you know about this 03, has it over heated badily, may be more then head gaskets.
Have you ever done head gaskets before, where are you buying your parts and what are you planning on replacing?

Default Head Gasket

I bought the car from a guy in MD and I actually spoke to the mechanic who worked on his car and diagnosed the head gasket. As far as have I ever done a head gasket job, no but I feel I am capable but know it will take me quite some time to do it. I was told that it had only started overheating about a week ago. I bought a head gasket kit and head bolts from atlantic british and they will be here Monday.

You will need more then that, down load the Rave Manual so you have something to work from, order a new t/stat and coolant pressure cap.
If you have any questions, send me your number and I'll call you.
