Just went out there and drove around the block a couple of times. Heard a fierce shaking metal sound up front. Kinda sounds like when your brakes are metal on metal from being worn? These sounds statrted just the other day after putting up first post I was playing with throttle on top of engine and now interior dome light wants to stay on? Don't know if all ties together but really to freak me out. Don't want to take to half a#$ mechanic dont know if im knowledgable enough to fix myself?

A. No more driving.

B. Examine the front drive shaft, which can split and beat up transmission.

C. Rovers have brakes like every other truck, and if pads wear enough they'll make noise, then they start grinding new grooves in that shiny brake rotor disc.

I don't think its my brakes I was just using that as an example of what I heard that I think is coming from front of my engine. After playing with throttle the disco has this weird off beat shreeking sound, also sounds like a BB is dancing in or on top of my motor like a slipping metal passing each other? Looked at some forums from Spike and he was saying something about bearings in the pulleys and alternator? Also may sound funny but the (cats) can you shed some light on that for me ha ha!! Let me know what you think and when I can start freaking out walking that line now ha ha!! Thanks Buzz! Also since playing with throttle dome light stays on and alarm is honking when it never did before thats why I kinda thinking new alternator but dont know if that would be it?

Here is an easy way to narrow it down. Take a yard stick, hold against your ear, and touch other part to suspect items while at idle. You'll hear noises never heard before over the roar of the engine. You can also slip off the belt, and crank up. If noise is gone, it was something that rotates, like the power steering pump or alternator or a pulley. Turn each item that is turned by the belt and check for roughness.

If cats have fragments inside them they will make a rattling noise, and will do that when bumped with a rubber mallet or such when cold and truck not running.

A vacuum leak will make all sorts of shrieking noises, but so does a bad pulley or belt.

If you have a volt meter ($10 and up), expect 13.8 - 14.4 volts across battery with truck at idle, with only engine turned on. Can drop to 13.2 with all the lights, AC, fan, wipers on. A parts store will usually do a free check of battery and alternator output.

take off you belt and start the truck for a minute with it off, see if the noise goes away if it does then its one of your Accessories, if not its deep in the engine.

Cats are catalytic converters right past the exhaust manifold. I believe this is what they are talking about

Also, check the heat shield on top of the cat. I had a nasty rattle a few weeks back and found the heat shield had come loose on one side and would tap the exhaust pipe. I tacked it with a welder... Problem solved.

Ok.. This is what I see fan wobbles metal shreds at bottom of plastic fan column/fitting makes a grinding sound on and off like it gets out of motion and grinds hitting something? Whats my next step? Crankshaft Pulley or whole thing? Can this cause internal damage? Thanks
