I was traveling along the motorway at 70 mph, when I lost all drive. The discovery 2 continued to tick over but when left in gear, it had no drive. A friend said to put it in low gear and it started to drive. Then I put it back in hi gear and it now works as one would expect. I now drive a bit slower. Does anyone know what might of been the problem and what needs to be addressed.

Your transfer case might have slipped into neutral.

 

On a normally operating D1/D2 it would be next to impossible to slip into N due to the interlock solenoid, however with these trucks getting older the interlock solenoid "could" seize up in the disabled postion which would cause you to move it from 4Hi/N/4Lo freely.

 

What you described happened to me several years ago as I was leaving a Boy Scout camp heading home with six boy scouts on board. I was just a few hundred yards onto the main road outside camp when suddenly there was nuthin'. Panic. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (think of the acronym).

Happily it turned out to be simply that the T-case shifter had popped into neutral. In my case I had been offroading in a remote part of camp and had likely not gotten the T-case shifter back fully into High after being in Low the day before.

I don't know whether or not my circumstances apply to your truck and your situation but I suggest that you not panic. Unlike I did.

 

It was a completely common occurrence with 97-06 Jeep Wranglers. They didn't have any kind of interlock, and I don't know how many Jeeps I've seen that were flat towed, they hit a large bump in the road, the TC popped into 4Lo or 4Hi and exploded.. I've seen transmission tunnels opened up like beer cans due to that.

If it's the t-case just stick it back in High and keep driving.

 

Didn't I say don't panic? Yeah, I did. Don't panic. Just drive it.

Now on the other hand if it happens again get back to us. But don't panic.

 

You must not have had a solid engagement on the hi-low axis. I know mine is really clunky and there are several "notches" between neutral and hi gear. I could definitely see it popping into neutral if I didn't spend the time to positively engage it.

 

Slap it back into 4Hi & keep on trucking.
