I took the disco back to the shop that worked on it. They are getting multiple cylinder misfires. They are saying that the sleeves may be detaching. They are telling me that it will likely need a short block. The guy I talked to said that he was a LR tec for 9yrs.
Anyone have any pionters on how i should proceed with this, and how much $ it should cost me?

Where are you located and how many miles on the truck? Did the problem start small and then build up, or just one day started doing that? Any noise from the engine (ticks, taps, bangs, etc)? I would find someone else to take a quick look before letting that moron touch anything.

I'm in Jacksonville, Fl. The truck is Atlanta. I don't have a problem bringing it back down if someone knows someone down here that is good. There are no ticks, bangs or noise out of the ordinary of any kind. It just looses power under a load and the service engine light starts flashing. It just started out of the blue. The engine has about 50k on it from brand new from about 2 years ago. I got lucky and had one of the 2003's with the bad oil pumps. The truck has 148k.

If you have no sounds, I'm less likely to think it is something like a slipped liner. I would chase down the wire/plug/coil pack for that one, and then look to the o2/cat/air intake.

I replaced all 4 o2's, and maf after all of this started. No change. I had considered the cats. Thanks for the info.

Also....been getting your post and another similar one mixed up today! Sorry!
The flashing light points me to the cats, but many options there. Possible to do a quick Seafoam induction cleaning and run some good injector cleaner through the tank as well? Also, make sure there are no obstructions in the air intake system, especially where it goes into the fender.

Im looking for a new professional.

My "professional" said in addition to the $4700 that had already been spent fixing absolutly nothing, and i do mean ABSOLUTLY NOTHING, an additional $13xxx would also be required to replace the long block. Ive heard good things about a lr garage in Chatanooga, and Jacksonville, FL. Anyone?..

The slipping sleeve may lead to misfires, but it makes noise. Coolant from a cracked block oozing up through the sleeves makes steam out the tail pipe, violent steam bubbles inside the cooling system, and coolant in cylinders causes misfires. $50 exhaust gas in coolant test from parts store may point on that. Green dye in coolant can point to which cylinder is involved by exam of spark plugs. Block pressure test can confirm cracked block.

But there are plenty of good shops in the Atlanta metro area as well. These are in the indy list on this site, and one member recently reported good results with "The Shop".

This sounds exactly like the symptoms I had when my camshaft failed. Two lobes became basically round, one intake and one exhaust. This was on a replacement block with 50k on it.

The LR dealer told me I'd need a new engine, however I found an indy guy who replaced the shaft, lifters, oil pump, front cover, and timing chain while things were apart.

After that is when I switched to Rotella 15w 40.

The dealer who replaced my engine broke it in with Castrol Synthetic 5w 40 which is what I kept using until the camshaft incident.

The camshaft failure was gradual starting out, at first just low power on hills, no flashing lights, then one day on a steep hill with no power i put my foot in the accelerator and instantly got it to backfire and the SES came on blinking. From that point on it backfired on load and the light flashed, multiple misfire codes.

The mechanic did flush the engine to remove any remnants of the cam shaft.

no issues since.

Total cost around $2k
