Default noisey DII's

Ok, this is a faily common thread..."my DII has a ticking noise"
Chrisinhouston brought up a good point about motor oils in his thread about oil additives.
This got me thinking.
So here are my thoughts on this.
Since newer motor oils are designed to preserve the emissions systems of cars by having lesser amounts of ZDDP (a oil anti wear additive), lesser amounts of ZDDP means less protection for the lifters and rocker arms.
So are the noisy lifters in DII's caused by the newer motor oils?
Those of you with out noisy lifters what motor oil are you using?
Here is some info that I found, I also posted it in Chris' thread.
And as a side note, every oil manufatores site that I went to said do NOT use any oil additives, even Land Rover says right in the owners manual not to use after market oil additives.

I am also courious as to what motor oil others use and what weight you use.
I use Mobil 1 15w-50.

Castrol 5w30 = November through April.
Rotella 15w40 = May through October.

No valve lifter noise on 00 SD(78 K) and 04 SE7 (49 K)

Less valve lifter noise on the 01 SE7 (98 K) when 5W30 is used. Strange but true, as it should be the other way around.

I was running Mobil 1 5w40, then when I had my head gaskets replaced the shop did an oil change with 5w30. I forgot to ask what oil they used. Next oil change I am switching to Royal Purple 15w40 since the Rover is now staying in Colorado and I have 3 gallons sitting in my garage from when I had my Dodge diesel.

The more common internal engine noise is from the rocker assembly with one exception, if you follow the manufactures recommondation and do 7500 oil changes the valves can in fact start plugging up and with poor circulation they can become noisy.
By the way, In the last 6 years I have used Castrol blend and now Mobil1 with no noise.

So have you heard of this on DI's also Mike?
So far I have only heard of it on DII's.
I am just trying to better understand this phenomina.
Not saying one is better than the other, they are the same engine after all.
You think it is soley related to oil change frequency?

like i said before the amsoil 10w40 clearly states on the bottle that it is formulated to include flat tappet engines. so you have a modern synthetic that has a formulation mated for a engine technology that is going on a century old.

I use Castrol CRB Turbo 15W-40.
Thing is, I think diesel engines are inherently noisy than gas-powered engines.

they are by nature a noisy engine. my 08 ford diesel is considered quiet in terms of diesel engines and at highway speeds you can barely hear it, but from outside of the cab it is fairly noisy. but what do you expect from something that explodes its fuel by only squeezing the crap out of it without the use of a spark plug,,,,

Yes, it has been around for awhile, either the rocker arm itself or the shaft, usually the shafts. Rover tried on a few occasions to correct it and never could. The funny thing is that when Buick was still making/using this engine, it was not noisy, didn't real leak, more then any other engine and didn't eat head gaskets.
