Are you referring to is it a OBD1 or OBD2, if so, it is an OBD2.

The protocol is the Data Format the ECU of the car uses. The scanner first tries to find the correct Data Format (the protocol) when just plugged in. After the correct protocol is established, the data can be collected.
My scanner (OBD 2)cycles thru the protocols and can't "shake hands" with the car, so no data can be read.
I'm just wondering if the scanner has the correct protocol for the '99 Discovery 1.

You are trying this with the key ON right? The key MUST be in the "RUN" position, if not it will not connect with the ECU.

LOL!!! Yes, with the key on and in "run" as the instruction sheet says.
I think I'll go to the neibour tomorrow and try it on his Found On Road Dead to verify the scanner.
