In all honesty, what difference is it going to make whether it's 16, 18, 22 or 104 mpg? it is unlikely that anyone will tear down their engine to make another 2 to 4 mpg in any case. If the engine is good and well serviced it won't make a good return on investment swapping out new parts. These are old trucks with iffy transmissions, brakes and engines so not optimum gas savers and the V8 engines are reputedly 'thirsty' and the trucks weigh in about 2.5 tons so it's really academic.

i have only had my 2002 D2 for about two months, but I used the pen and paper method and did the math off of mileage and I have been getting about 13 around town and 16.5 on the highway at 70mph on regular gas. I did not know I should be using premium! Glad to find that out now! (My D2 had no owners manual when I bought it). Luckily I only run top tier fuel anyway bit now that I know I will switch to premium fuel.

Isn't there a sticker inside the filler flap that says to use only premium fuel?

Cut him some slack. He's from Oregon. The only other state besides NJ that doesn't allow you to pump your own gas.

I've lived in OR for 10 years now, and I absolutely HATE waiting for some person to come pump my gas....It's a total joke. They are never in a hurry, let me tell ya.....The best is when you go ahead and remove the nozzle and put your cap back on (because your tired of waiting for some jack a$$ that's talking to another costumer about there dog), and you hear them yell at you, "Hey you can't do that!".....It's pretty funny.

I fill up in NJ fairly often, since it's often more useful/convenient for me to be there than any other part of NYC. Most of the time the attendants are pretty on top of the game, and don't waste too much time. And I really like that they almost always allow riders to fill their own bikes because of the trickiness of small tanks.

The one time I was filling the Rover at a full service station and forgot that I was supposed to be using premium, the attendant asked if I was certain that I wanted regular since he had seen the label under the flap.

I've always used Premium 93 octane gas in my Discos.
My now 2001 Disco is getting roughly 14 MPG in city and on my old '97 Disco that I had in England, I was getting 19 mpg in the country.
