Odd Transmission Issues - New to Land Rover
Not to hijack the thread, but TC and transmission is the only think on my disco that has not been replaced. At what point should you rebuild or replace? Or should you just run to failure?
Transmission and Torque Converter all depends on how the truck was driven, and maintained. My Kalahari with 240K+ has the original transmission & it shifts like a new D2 and I've done 1 drain/fill/filter job on it since I've owned it. The fluid came out looking excellent and looked like it wasn't very old at all with absolutely zero burnt smell to it. ZF22/ZF24 are extremely well built and reliable transmissions especially if you maintain them. Only thing that can go bad and if not caught quickly enough can cause issues is the 25.00 flex plate. Just this year alone I had to mess with 3 of them being broken into tiny pieces and 2 of the owners swore their transmissions had failed when in reality it was the flex plate. Sadly yes the part can be as cheap as 25.00, but the labor to get to it is almost as much as replacing the entire transmission.
I have two over 220k, both HP22's, no inssues. There was a problem in early HP22's where they woudl rev the engine in neutral and burn out the front clutch due to seal leakage. As long as your state is not one of those where that is done you should be fine.
