Default Odd vibration noise

Looking for some help.

With the engine running, the shift in R or D and when I move the steering to the right or left, a vibration noise begins.
It is a deep muffled vibration noise as opposed to a clicking or pinging noise.
With the engine running and the shift in P and when I move the steering right or left the noise is slight.

Any ideas as to what may be going on?

Power steering fluid normal? Steering box? This assumes you are not moving when this happens. Noise from pump? You can use a mechanic's stethoscope (auto parts store) or broom handle (SWMBO) and press to pump and press ear against the stick.

So what have you checked so far so we don't have to guess too much?

Thanks for the replies.

The power steering fluid is at normal level.
I do not hear any noise from the steering box.
I can hear the noise only when the D2 is in "r or "d" It is slight while standing still. When the wheel is turned (left or right) the noise is increases. it is not a whining/squeal noise.
More like a baffle type if that makes any sense.
