I've worked extensively on my truck these past many years but I still do not understand the workings of engines, specifically internal components and workings. Is it true that you have to replace the oil pump front cover every time the oil pump fails? How does the front cover get damaged to the point that it cant be polished/machined?

Thanks for support and useful links. The pump just arrived and now Im just waiting on the oil pan gaskets.

The inside of the front cover, the oil pump gears run flush against it. Hardened gears vs aluminum housing.
The inner cover where the gears are against is what wears. If you were to polish or mill it, you would be removing more material. Wear, scratches, gouges have already worn it partially down.
The bigger the gap there, the lower the oil pressure.
It's just the nature of the design.

I still have not heard from the shop yet. Not even sure if the oil pump is in fact bad. I will give Lucky 8 a call but hesitant to buy anything else until I hear back from the shop. Also I want to be prepared in case this is a lost cause. Will need at least 1k put aside for a beater 4x4 or cargo van should I decide to quit this build.

Sounds like the oil pump design was not well engineered and thus too easily damaged. I really wish GM and Land Rover put more time into the engine development.... Im half tempted to source a Toyota Land Cruiser engine and swap that sucker into a rust free D2......

I'm not sure that you meant your comment to come off as a twist of the knife or not, but scoring points when someone is clearly in a really tough spot seems contrary to the spirit of community on which classic and niche car sites are built.
I wouldn’t say it’s exactly a twist of the knife, i will say that a proper apology or at least recognition that he has been unfair in his criticism of Lucky8 and the other suppliers should happen at this point. Maybe that would take too much awareness or class, but I was shocked to hear that

1) Lucky8 sold him parts

2) he actually ordered parts from Lucky8

Goes to show that when someone, even Julian, is in trouble this community is willing to help even though said member has burned his US bridges.

Why were you shocked that Lucky8 would fulfill an order? They’re good people and not ********.

local car dealerships have been competing against discount chains since time began by advertising their increased service level and attention, why would this be any different?

i just think that there’s a time and a place for piling on or “I told you so’s”. The guys engine just **** the bed, on Christmas.

No need to throw GM under the bus as they do that well enough on their own. GM sold the rights for that engine to Rover more than 50 years ago and Rover has upped the displacement and modified the engine numerous times. And that front cover is completely different than anything that GM would have used back in the day if distributers.

This was different because If I (you)had a small specialty business and one of my (your) previous customers publicly, on the internet made derogatory remarks about my (your) business and my (your) character I (you should) would refuse to sell to them. There are consequences in life. I’m saying he should admit he was wrong and apologize, I’m not kicking him when he is down. In fact I have been contributing to this thread in a helpful way despite his claims against me.But if you think he is without fault, that is your prerogative.

For now, it would be nice if the topic could stay clear of unnecessary remarks and focus on the issue at hand. Let's just follow along and see what happened to the engine.

If and when a time comes to comment about the past...ya'll can knock yourself out then.

Personally, I come here for the community, receiving advice, give some once in awhile and conversation with folks of similiar interest...not the drama...regardless of who is causing it or displaying bad behavior. I do find it odd that a person...with a total of 12 posts...is the one that felt the need to bring up past events.
