Oil Pump Gears Unbroken on 150,000 miles inspection (photos/video)
I’m replacing the front cover and a lot of other things and wanted to see if the oil pump gears were broken - they weren’t. I think the red oil light I’d seen had only flashed a few times on a few drives up the mountain at a very steep part when I wasn’t giving it gas around a sharp turn. I think it was leaking oil from different places including the front seal in the timing cover, but I believe that oil light stopped showing when I added more oil - did the PCV mod afterward and can’t remember if I began using T4 oil before or after. I’m not exactly sure I had an issue beyond just low oil, but maybe it was something else. I just figure that if it was, the oil light would have kept showing even after adding more oil. Am I supposed to check the other side of the front cover (behind the gears on the inside) for gouging?
If you've got it apart, in my opinion, there's no way I'm not replacing the gears. Even if they aren't broken they can and will still be worn. Cheap insurance on a motor you want to last.

Thank you - I’m replacing them since the front cover is broken. I broke part of it trying to fit an adapter in to do an oil pressure test, so I ordered a new one that came with the oil pump gears, which I filled with petroleum jelly. I replaced the seal with a Corteco seal and installed an oil pressure sensor that’ll connect to a gauge.
I’m also putting in a new water pump, power steering pump, installing an inline thermostat, possibly replacing the coolant expansion tank since I ordered a new one before pressure testing the cooling system and seeing the artificial heart thermostat leaking. Big job for me… I kept this Disco running for 5 years on my own until I screwed up the front cover and it’s been sitting for a while, which has really sucked. This work is all new to me.
I tried to assemble everything (power steering pump, inline thermostat, water pump/front cover/pressure sensor) beforehand so it’s easier to put back together after the oil/engine work I’m dealing with first. They’re all new parts so they’re shiny, but hopefully I won’t have any ridiculous leaks when I put everything back together and quickly get back to gunk city like it is now. Tomorrow I’ll clean everything (sump/ mating surfaces, timing cover area) and try to deal with the sleeve and chain, hopefully I can at least manage that.
