i heard about the vin range for 03 that have that oil pump defect, and i got lucky with mine, but my dad's 03 falls right in between that range...as of now nothing has happened, his 03 has 70,000 miles...is there anything he can do to prevent what is coming???

 

Nope, if it is going to fail it will unless you know what to listen/look for. AIf you catch the engine the first time the oil light comes on, shut it off and have it towed to a shop, a new oil pump and front cover can be installed and you'll be OK untill it tries to fail again.

What exactly is wrong with the engine/pump? I mean is it the oil pump or what is it that is defected? Cant believe they didnt recall or something...

 

its the engine block itself, dowels are misaligned and causes strain on the pump. new pump is a bandaid and it will happen again. but yeah, if you catch it in time, you wont destroy the engine

 

There have been some suits, no one has really gotten much help and TaTa won't do a recall on it.
