P1171
The UG popped up pending code: P1171. Came up once before over a month ago, cleared it and have not seen it until tonight while I was driving up a hill with Sport mode enabled. The LR code database I use seems to be down or something cause every time I try to go to the url it says "problem loading page". What is the definition for P1171 and what to look for?
Disco has 133K. Regular oil changes. No fluid/s lose. Premium fuel always used. Secondary air reservoir and brake servo booster (related to vacuum systems) have just been replaced. Air filter is like new. Fuel injector cleaner used every few months or less. Exhaust manifold to pipe gasket was just replaced and no noticeable exhaust leaks (have not examined system but the exhaust sounds the way it should). Previous owner replaced 1 or 2 O2 sensors. Only other code Ive seen periodically is P0501 which I still have not figured out yet. Cleared P0501 over a week ago and yet not seen it since.
What to do first? I plan on cleaning the MAF and performing the cigar smoke test next week, Ill also examine the exhaust closely to see if theres any leaks. Anything else I should look for?

For 1171 see page 334 of 1529 in a more reliable code list, the RAVE workshop manual.
If you have the RAVE open, press CTRL+F to open a search window.
For the 0501, with an automatic you have two VSS sensor inputs, one from SLABS (averages the wheel sensors) and another from tranny ECU (output shaft speed). Probably not cheap to fix.
If you would like more info on how various codes are created, what triggers them, etc., the Bosch ECU manual, which is not included in the RAVE, is another factory source. Find it in the cloud at https://www.cubby.com/pl/LR3+worksho...uter%20Manuals or link thru my signature.
Many other code lists are bogus, full of generic gibberish, and just hard to deal with. The ones built into code readers fall into this group. Rover may use the code one way, all Yugos may have it different.
You are on the right track for finding a lean condition, it may also include un-metered air sneaking in after the MAF (split hose, loose clamp).

Thanks again and glad to see your still with us Buzz
The tranny ECU sends on VSS signal and the SLABS ECU sends another (averages the wheel sensors). Not sure what Bosch ECU does with both of them. It is not going to be a cheap sensor rebuild like a D1. Expensive to throw parts at.
Hopefully it goes away. I think improbable is based on comparison to rpm and gear selected, it expects you to be going 60 and sensor registered say 27.5 or such.
I didn't leave, I just got a job that takes up a lot more time and involves some living out of a suitcase. So I can't devote as much time as I once did.

So I actually have to smoke the cigar for the smoke test?...... Im buying one in couple days but honestly Im not a smoker so not to found of getting a cloud of that **** in my lungs! Just saying.
You don't have to inhale the smoke in your lungs. You can take a breath and then just suck in enough smoke to fill your mouth. Then blow what is in your mouth in your hose. I just used a regular black and mild I got when I stopped to get gas one day and it worked just fine.
Also, if you'll drink apple juice after you're done it helps to get the smoke taste out of your mouth.
