P1173 and Loud Engine "Ticking" Noise
For several weeks, my engine had been making a loud "ticking" noise that could easily be heard several feet from the car. I assumed that it might be a slipped liner or other ominous issues that I have read about on this forum.
Then last week I started getting a P1173 trouble code which is a bad O2 sensor on the passenger side pre-cat.
After some investigation, I realized that I was missing 2 out of 3 studs/nuts from the passenger-side connection between the exhaust manifold and down exhaust pipe. I installed new studs/nuts and now the noise is significantly reduced and the P1173 error is gone.
I just wanted to pass this information along in case someone else is experiencing similar symptoms.

they have almost everything, including all exhaust gaskets and studs, and they're cheap .
Odds are though that at least one stud on each side will break. I had 2 break per side. No big deal, as I was removing the manifolds anyway. No problem to drill and tap then...but wouldn't be fun with them on the engine.
The countless heat cycles weld them in, and the nuts on, so as you try to loosen the nut, the nut binds, and the stud snaps.
Best chance is a wire brush, and a few days of penatrating oil, sprayed on hot and cold.
With the new stud kit, if one of the old studs won't come out, but the threads aren't damaged, and a new nut will thread one, reuse the old stud.
I torque them to spec too.
That way I have less risk of over tightening and wringing or breaking them, and do not crush the crush gasket beyond where it's supposed to be, so it'll last longer.
All 6 studs are easy to access from underneath with a few long extensions.
