Default Pain in butt just to get codes read

spent a hour on the phone with local shops trying to just get my ABS codes read.

called a indy british shop and they could do it, but they wanted to truck all day. i said no i just want codes read and cleared. i can wait,, then they insisted it takes 4 hours.

called a european shop and they did not even have the right equipment. called a few other places and non of them could do it.

so i called a shop that only works on landys that is down the block from the local dealer. they not only have the right equipment, but actually would simply read and clear the codes for me while i waited. i go in first thing monday morning before work and it is done. why this is so hard, i dunno. i guess that the shops around here are used to dealing with people who are heavy in the wallet and light in the head,,,

Your heavy in the wallet and light i the loafers...

That sucks, it should not be so hard to get codes read.
A guy here in town bought a "ABS Amigo" off of e-bay for under $200 and it reads and clears codes great, he figures if he uses it 2 times hes gotten his money back.

i was amazed at how these shops are. they literally are confused when i explain what i want done. like they are thinking " sir! you actually want to work on your own vehicle"?

again like i said they must be used to dealing with people who have never changed their own oil let alone can tell the difference in fluids that weep from these rigs

Sloppy...if you don't mind me asking, what is the name of the shop? Being in South Hill, knowing a shop that will do this is worth knowing for future use.

Thanks!

ask around on a local LR forum, maybe somebody has a ABS amigo they'll let you borrow.

Default Reading Codes

You're right. Shops don't want to read your codes, they don't even want to tell you you have such a thing and most people now a days think modern cars are impossible to work on. When someone sees me working on my vehicles they'll say something like, "yeah I used to work on my car when you didn't have to be a computer scientist". When really the fact of the matter is they're just too darn lazy, or would rather pay someone else to do it and get a little dirty. If you are ignorant, a shop can charge you $1,000 to replace your alternator with a $150 rebuilt one and make you think you're getting a good deal !

you are correct.the only difference from a 30 year old truck and the modern rigs is that systems are no longer mechanically operated, but electronically. once you get around that they are the same basic platforms. parts are the same now as they have always been. its just a matter of getting a bit dirty and busting a few knuckles. its like my 308. people are shocked when i tell em i do all the mechanical work on it. yes EVERYTHING is difficult to get to. YES it is tight and goofy, but hey! thats italian for ya.

the rover is a basic truck. yes way more electronic gremlins can pop up, but once you know where to look the repairs are usually not too difficult.
