Default Pop Clunk Gremlin

What would cause a " pop / clunk sound" emanating from the steering gear box area whilst turning steering wheel from lock to lock. Noise is heard 2 to 3 times . While front end is lifted noise is not heard.

Replaced drag and track rod , The gearbox was replaced 2 years ago (leaking) with another used unit bought online. I have some play in the steering wheel, If the steering is not centralized properly would it make pop/ bind/ clunk type of sound? I want to inspect the lower steering shaft as well The steering feels fine, not tight , not loose, other than small amount of play at the steering wheel. Looking at rave now for ideas, What do you guys think?

I typically hear that type of sound when the front sway is binding up.

There is some info on the web concerning this along with a fix. Something to do with the steering box mount to the frame if i remember correctly. Use Google and this site to search; it was 1 or the other where I came across it. LR has a TSB or whatever it is for the repair as well

In regard to my intro:

There's info in the RAVE for adjusting the box for play but if the wheels are immediately responsive to your steering them, this is not your problem. Also, the clunk has nothing to with a little play in the steering. Any noise is going to be a bushing, something broken or that spacer-fix to where the steering box is mounted as outlined in the steps via link above. Furthermore, an ACE system (if equipped) has more points of failure but you didn't specify. Search is your friend here.

I have my laptop in the garage with me now, I just checked the torque values on the steering gear box mounting bolts and they were off by about 8 foot pounds , , Just torqued em to rave specs. checking now. Also non ace system, I have new upper and lower ball-joints but I need to get the press before I can install them. Still making noise after road test just now

Tightening the bolts won't solve your problem if you have that broken spacer issue. I think you should do some more investigating on that area & read over that procedure again beforehand so that you will know what you are looking for when you have hands on the steering box

I'd check the ball-joints and CV/axle joints to start.
