Default Post rebuild Coolant temps: 221f after mixed driving

According to my scan tool, I've been seeing 195-205F temps but today, after some highway driving that dumped me into town (slow, stop-n-go traffic), I watched as the temps hit 221F.
The dash gauge never budged past horizontal.
Is this normal?
I think I'm going to order a 180F tstat tonight as the one in it is the stock temp (which is what ??)

Any thoughts?
No coolant use, check engine codes, or any issues.
Running, real nice.

Gauge wont move from horizontal till you hit about 235-240.

Is your radiator new? Fan clutch?

If weather was hotter today than it has been, those would be my first guesses.

Do yourself a favor and buy the real Land Rover Grey 180 soft spring thermostat. I changed to one and I am at 188 highway and 194 city. I've used motorad and it doesn't compare.

There's been a few good threads here lately about cooler temps after the install of the 180º stat. Do a quick scan of these then get that thermostat!

Radiator is clear (was also flushed prior to install during the rebuild) I haven't noticed if the fans are coming on, I'll check that tomorrow.
Yes, I've read nearly all the recent tstat posts, thanks.
I'll install that 180F (soft spring) tstat and report back.

If you have an IR thermometer, you can "shoot" the fins of the rad. about 10F spread top to bottom is max. Much cooler on bottom indicates blocked with sludge, which reduces the square inches of surface area that have real water flow behind them and heat transfer. Like having half a radiator.

Amen on 180F stat, and praise the OBDII vs the factory gauge.

Savannah,
Good call on the IR thermometer. Harbor Freight sells on for about $35. Cheap insurance when doing regular maintenance.

To IMQuattro:
I also have the Ultragauge. It shows 188-degrees at highway cruising speeds and 194-degrees when idling with the factory 180-degree thermostat.
