I bought a 99 D2 this week with 96k miles on it and have replaced 1 O2 sensor and a magical $260 key. Not bad so far but...

I'm noticing that when I turn to the left at times, the steering feels like it no longer has power steering for about 1 second and then goes back to power steering. It's happened about 5 times and has never happened to the right. I just had the power steering flushed and filled (it was over-filled when I bought it) and it's happened 1 time in a 24 hour period since then. Any thoughts? Rack, belt, pump?

As a side note, if you are around 100,000 miles, you should replace all 4 02's to regain some old power and balance out your air fuel ratio.
As for the steering do a p/s fluid flush using 5 quarts of p/s fluid and 1 bottle of Lucas.

First step to completing the 60k service list is to click on the link for the RAVE manual in my signature. It will save a lot of time trying to figure things out on your own.

 

Do you know what brand of power steering fluid they used?
I recently read in a mechanics magazine that some manufacturers require a power steering fluid with "X" ingredients and that a lower quality power steering fluid was burning up power steering pumps and acting just like yours is.
So here is what I would do, take it back to the shop and find out what brand of power steering fluid they used.
Then either have them do it again using a different (and better) brand and that you will pay for the fluid but the labor is on them.
Remember that not all fluids are equal.
Take care of this ASAP or you will loose your power steering pump.

 

Update: They used Royal Purple 01326 Max EZ.

I also notices that on startup, the system seems to require slightly more muscle (probably has less pressure) than when driving at a slightly higher RPM. I idle around 850 RPM.

This weekend, I'm doing plugs, wires and 3 more O2 sensors. Sounds like I might also just replace the PS pump and move on.

Don't be so quick to replace the p/s pump until you are sure, or unless you just want to lighten your wallet.
Try flushing it out with regular p/s fluid and throw in a can of Lucas, won't cost you much and after a day of driving if it isn't better then replace it.

 

Believe it or not these vehicles are picky enough about fluids that synthetic may not be the best choice. It will like some fluids and others will cause problems. I have never had any problems with Royal Purple but I also have never tried RP power steering fluid in a Rover.

Mike - could he have an air bubble somewhere in the system causing this?

 

I am, by the way, a big Royal Purple person, but as AK has mentioned our trucks are a little strange.

 

I agree, the formulation for the RP power steering fluid may not be the right kind for your truck.
