Default prob#2....spongy brakes

The brakes have always been good on the car even though i have the "3 amigos"...i recently had it diagnosed as a bad shuttle valve.
since yesterday the brake pedal needs to be pushed once before the brakes "grab"...the brakes work without the pump, but feel spongy, I also just noticed that when not moving...if i apply the brakes, i can here a kind of clicking at the gear shifter.
When the engine is off and keys out i can here a ticking noise coming from the abs unit under the hood....and another noise coming from the fuse box on the left hand side of the engine bay.
I havn't had the wheels off to check the pads, but i felt the pad thickness through the wheel and they have good meat left.
Is the shuttle valve something the average home mechanic can fix?

The clicking is normal.
When did you last replace the brake pads and do a full brake bleed?
The 3 Amigo's is not causing this problem.

You're losing pressure, find out from where...quickly. You're describing a master cylinder failure, or other pressure leak. Pumping up the brakes to create pressure when the MC has bad seals, or a possible seal on one of the calipers is going out. You can look at the back sides of the tires to see if you have one covered in fluid.

As for the shuttle valve issue, look at the stickies on this forum, it's a pretty easy fix. And since you're going to be already in there....

I have not replaced the pads on this vehicle since i got it, I'll jack it up tomorrow and check, i ordered front pads yesterday..(just in case)

I topped up the master cylinder before i left for the trip...(when i say i , i mean a bud) so i don't know how low it was, it is still full after 1400 miles so i think you could be right about the pads.
Is changing the pads the same as any "normal" vehicle? or are there any special tools or instructions?.

No fluid loss that i can see from the calipers.
Like i said, i have limited tools here..but by some standards you could say i'm still pretty well equiped.

Thanks for the speedy replies, i'd hate to have to take it to a dealer

Land Rovers are no more special to work on than any other car or truck.
You need to replace your brake fluid, when it wears out your brakes will be spongy.

Who's brake pads did you order?
When installing them, use lots of sound deadening spray to keep them quiet and do a 3 pint flush using only DOT 4 or better yet a synthetic brake fluid.
