TRIARII -

Tom Woods has a very long standing reputation. I am new to the drive shaft world but when I was researching products I learned much about Tom Woods through a local 4x4 retailer here in Alberta Canada. This guy that owns the shop, well I know him well and his first recommendation was for a Tom Woods Shaft.

My only real reason for not buying a Tom Wood shaft was financial. I do believe that ProShaft is supplying a quality drive shaft and as I already said, I will be getting a couple more opinions on it from local Drive Line shops.

I wouldn't say anything bad about them, you are just opening another can of worms - so to speak.

I was quoted $389 + 10 Handling at Tom Woods. (quote came in today)
that is $400 in my books
$300 for Justin's $100 difference
Mongo,
If you don't maintain them I bet your premium Tom Woods shaft will have its grease cooked out too. Maintain them and they will last.

My stock "Genuine" shaft is still in tact and no hole in my transmission - 131K! Once I get Justins propshaft installed I will re-grease it and again every 3,000 miles while doing my oil change. If it fails I would be very surprised Honestly I dont think it will. Not everyone wants to add the extra weight or spend the extra $45+ on a heavy duty propshaft. Not everyone takes their Rovers off-road. $45 can go a long way and saving every penny is worth it Different people have different needs.

I'm not sure that this shaft will only be suitable for a weekend warrior. If you are running a big lift and need a double cardan shaft or a custom length then this isn't for you, but it sounds like the pieces used to build it are much upgraded from stock. I would think that the axles and differential would break before this shaft. Am I missing something?
As far as having a double cardan on both ends, then no, I don't have that capability yet. I'm pretty sure, however, that it's a 2-28-2867X press fitted and welded into a 2-3-8001KX with the rest of the CV parts installed afterwards. Custom lengths, however, are no problem and I'd be happy to have a custom length shaft drop shipped to anyone at no additional charge. All I need is the flange to flange measurement with the truck sitting on the ground. Thanks guys!

The quote I received from Tom Woods was for $290.00 so the difference is $100 with tax.

mongosd2 -with regular greasing of the u-joints, every oil change as some others have said, do you really think the shaft from ProShaft is going to break down that quickly?

I am also at 106,000 miles with the stock shaft and when it was inspected, well, there were no issues.

I do not doubt Tom Woods personally nor his reputation. But I question the bad attitude of someone who so strongly believes in TW products. Mongo is beginning to misrepresent Tom Woods with his bad attitude, and it turns me away from even considering Tom Woods products. Either way I say this again as others say: Just take care of your propshaft no matter the vendor and it will last a long time. Just keep up with greasing it and inspect it every once in awhile and everything should be fine - no hole in your tranny.

What bad attitude...I'm presenting facts and if that's a causes a issue with you, then there's really nothing left say to you.

I really hope you check your driveshafts more often than "every once and while"

Guru...can't say, I've seen the TW stuff survive some pretty stupid ****, on weekend warrior rigs. I'm basing this on "actual, real world" experience...

Whatever

TRIARII "Once I get Justins propshaft installed I will re-grease it and again every 3,000 miles while doing my oil change"

Every 3,000 miles: oil flush, oil and filter change, inspect propshafts (front and rear, and add grease. Every 3,000 miles is my game plan.

Just so we all have an idea without passing judgement to quickly, what is your background and experience with props? Have you been able to compare the TW prop to one that ProShaft is supplying or are you just basing your opinions on pictures and specs?

I ask because I am new to the different props and am learning all I can. If you know something that has not already been mentioned then I would like to know also.

Cheers!

I am with you TRIARII,
Different strokes for different folks. I do not off road my Discovery. This upgraded shaft is perfect for me.
Tired of all the mud slinging at this driveshaft. (coming from one member in particular)
We should glad that there is another good option to replace your old worn out driveshaft.
