Default puttering sound

My 00 DiscoII makes a puttering sound when I first crank it. It seems to go away after warm-up.
My husband says it sounds like I have an exhaust leak. How can I tell?

Does it have engine management or old style Distributor ? The dizzy system sometimes means that a cold running engine misfires slightly till warm if the dizzy needs replacing... If it is slight timing issue it could also possibly be the auto choke.
Also, it is possible that the joint between the manifold and the down pipe of the exhaust is not sealed correctly. This would mean a gentle puttering until the exhaust system heats up, when it goes away... and I have also had some small experience of Cats making odd sounds when cold on brand new cars.... can you see if there is any smutting around the exhaust joints or around the manifold ?
GB.
