My oldring was so rusted that I had to use a pair of side cuts to remove it.Then I figured out that the sealing gasket had to be in first to seat the pump. After the ring was alined right... it when right on with afew light taps to tighten it up.

Not on a D2. The nylon retaining ring is not meant to come off.
To replace it, you must grease it and slip it on using some tool from Land Rover.
We boiled it in hot water to make it pliable and screwed it on as far as it would go. It lacked about a quarter turn before being properly seated. We used a punch to attempt to seat it and cracked it. The ring never moved.
The 03 and 04's have a different pump and locking assembly. I'm not sure how they are on any previous to it.

I work for a dealership and have done these fuel pumps plenty of times. There is no need to grease it. No tool to slip it on. Use silicone spray to lubricate the pump gasket and make sure it goes in straight and seats fully. There is a tool to tighten/loosen the retaining ring, but not to "slip the ring on". If done correctly, you should be able to tighten most of the way by hand. Boiling it probably made it brittle and caused it to brake. I have actually fully tightened these before by hand when only trying to get the threads started. Sorry to hear about your luck and I hope it works out for you.
