Default Radio CD Button Issues

Hi all,

Long time lurker but first time poster so forgive me if I’ve put this in the wrong spot.

I’ve had a long standing issue with my CD changer in my 01 D2 with the hi line radio, CD button does not activate the changer.

This never bothered me before, and I troubleshot it down to what I figured was a faulty CD changer unit under the seat and just lived with it.

Now the real issue… Today, I installed a Grom bluetooth unit, and the CD button does not activate it. Nothing on the radio screen changes (no “no CD” messages or error messages). The CD button meters out as working (matches resistances of other buttons on the circuit board) when I test it, but it seems like it’s not triggering something inside the radio.

I guess my request is this; does anybody have an alpine radio internal circuit wiring diagram available? I’ve verified power to and from the radio, and every other function operates as it should minus CD. I’d like to chase down the internal radio issue if possible instead of spending 100 bucks or more on a replacement radio.

Alternatively, does anybody already have a solution for this? Specifically for the button not registering in the unit? I know there are plenty of forum posts about what to do when the CD changer doesn’t work, but what about when the button itself doesn’t register in the unit?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Does it every display CD0-00? If it does that, it could be the DVD player overriding the signal and you have to press the speaker button on it. I remember one time I was messing with the radio and had the cd player unplugged. With this, pressing the CD button did nothing. Maybe it cant sense that it is plugged in?

It doesn’t have a DVD player in this one, but it may be that it isn’t sensing the player plugged in. Nothing shows up on the screen when you press CD. It does have power coming out of the radio to the disc changer, as you can hear the disc cassette shuffle around when the car turns on, but beyond that it seems nothing makes it back to the head unit.

The stock headunit needs to see data across pin C0941-5 at the CD player in order for the CD button to be active. The GROM is supposed to emulate this data stream.

It looks like I’m not getting constant power out of the back of the head unit to power the CD/Grom unit. There should be some kind of power feed at C1354 pin 20, I haven’t got anything. Rest of the radio checks out, I just don’t have power there and I’m leaning towards this being the issue. If the Grom isn’t getting power, it can’t send info on any bus to the head unit to get the cd button to work. Any tips on what circuit inside the radio would be running this hot pin?

For the CD player to respond it should have its handshake circuitry healthy. And for the head unit to send a command to the player, its circuitry must have had no rain ingress corroding key places that disable functionality. Crack open the radio and inspect if any moisture ever got in, typically by the rear. Cleaning and restoring is not impossible as its unobtanium schematic diagram is.
