Question Radio has power, but no sound from speakers

Hey all! First post. Chasing down electricals...

I have an 04 Discovery 2 with stock audio system. It is the one with the Alpine amplifier underneath the driver's seat, but it does not have Harmon & Kardon components. I am using the RAVE electrical circuit diagrams manual LRL 0553NAS which refers to my system as "high line" shown on pages 124-127.

Recently the music stopped playing and won't come back. The radio head unit still turns on and off, functions, and communicates with the steering wheel controls. But no sound from any speakers.

First checked all all fuses and links: none broken.

Then, to confirm the head unit was still outputting sound, I picked a pair of signal wires and tapped R red and W white wires C0491-8 and C0491-16 (rear RH door speaker signal to amp) and connected them to a pair of old headphones. I could hear music through the ear of my headphones when I turned the head unit volume up. So the head unit is still outputting music signals.

To check amp power supply, I probed the LGP light green and purple wire going to the amplifier at the amplifier connector C0491-5 and it has constant 12v power like it's supposed to.

I then probed RU red and blue wire C0491-10 amp "remote" wire. This switched off/on with radio power, as I'd expect, but it only ever got to a max of between 1 and 2 volts at the amp where I was probing it. Is this signal supposed to switch off/on to the full 12 volts? Maybe this is my problem?

To confirm, I probed this same RU red and blue wire at the back of my head unit C0098-5 and it would go from 0v to just 1.16v with radio being switched on and off.

To isolate the rest of the system and see whether this was a head unit problem (not putting out enough voltage) or if maybe something downstream was being shorted to ground (like a rain-wetted aerial amplifier or something), I separated the RU red and blue remote wire at connector C0229-17/C0067-17. With this connector unplugged and therefore all loads removed from the head unit's remote wire, I again probed the RU red and blue wire at the back of my head unit C0098-5 and there was no improvement. Still just 0v and 1.16v as I pushed the radio power ****.

If this red and blue "remote" wire is supposed to switch on and off to the full 12v to signal the amp to turn on, it would explain why my speakers aren't putting out any music. And if so, seeing as the head unit isn't putting out the requisite voltage even with no load on it, then I think maybe my head unit is partially fried?

Think I need a new head unit? Even though it seems to be otherwise working just fine?

Maybe I'm just mis-understanding something? Thanks in advance for any advice or help!

Happened to me to seems exactly like your problem. I thought that it was the amp under the seat that got busted. Replaced the head unit with a Kenwood with a harness adapter. Works great for me plus it has bluetooth and usb input for flash mp3 files, they sell separate kit to control the unit on the steering wheel.
