Default Rear Hub O-rings

My rear driver side hub is leaking gear oil onto my wheel and brakes. The hub itself seems to be performing just fine.

Can I just replace the O-ring and the stake nut to fix the leak?

Thanks

Shouldn't even need a new nut. I've reused three or four with no ill effect.

X1 ............. also you can pull the hub and shaft without undoing the shaft nut. Ensure you clean up all the hob surface meticulously and also inside the axle tube. Use a cordless drill with a rotary brass wire brush inside the axle tube to clean it well but stuff a rag into the tube to keep the debris out. Don't forget to remove the rag afterwards though, it'll make a mess of your diff.

Smear grease inside the axle tube and on the hub to make it easier to push the hub and O ring back into place. Only use genuine O rings from Landrover as some aftermarket O rings are rubbish.

PS: Don't forget to replace the brake pads BOTH sides afterwards. Oil and brake pads don't mix well.

Thanks Offroad for confirming what I was thinking after consulting the manual... pull the axle, hub and all.

I think I can pull this off. Then turn my attention towards the rear T-Box seal. Yippee!

Stay rad

I've always put a small bead of RTV in along with O-Ring and I've never had a hub leak thru that spot.

I did once have an 04 that had the RR rotor & brakes go metal to metal on the way home after buying it. Once home it appeared to be leaking at the O-Ring, but upon removal the entire hub assembly was full of 80/90w and it was coming out of the hub bearing/abs sensor instead.

Replaced the hub & no more leaks.

Hopefully I won't have to replace the hub... yet.

When pulling the axle, will a slide hammer be necessary? What method has worked for those have done this?

Thanks

If removing the entire assemly Hub & Axle You can loosen the 4 hub bolts and then with about an inch showing use a slow blow hammer on the 4 hub bolts and it should allow the hub the slip out. If not soak it with penetrating oil.

X1 ............. getting the hub out can be a real PITA with the rust but rather than use the existing bolts if you can lay your hands on some temporary bolts (which I believe are 4# M12x1.5 TPI about 75mm long (please don't quote me on these though) preferably 8.8 or similar Allen capheads it does make life a little easier.

Yeah in my neck of the woods rust isn't an issue so usually two taps & the hub pops free. Now a D2 from up north is a whole other can of worms!!!

If ya had to beat on em yes grab some spare bolts to beat up lol.
