Red face Rebuild that front PS!!!

Howdy gang...

Just wanted to drop a quick note: Bought my first LR two weeks ago. An '01 SE with just 50K miles on it in near pristine condition. On the advice of several here, I decided to pull the front PS and rebuild it with servicable u-joints. I was not surprised to find that it appeared in great shape and the joints all moved as they should by hand with no issues.

Instead of doing it myself (the original plan) I elected to have a local, well regarded shop complete it for $180 parts included. I'm cheap, broke and unemployed, but that's still a pretty good deal. At any rate, when I picked it up this morning, the guy who worked on it said at first he wondered why he was tearing into it because it physically looked good (a little crispy from location) and felt fine. After he tore into though, he found TWO caps that were COMPLETELY dry.

Point is this; I'm a believer. Please, for the love of Dog and all that's holy-rebuild that propshaft. Who knows how long it could go. 5 miles? 500? 5000? If you do it yourself (not hard) parts can't be $80. Even if you need a tool or two, you're looking at no more than $120. Have it rebuilt for ~$200. If it breaks? Heartache. No way a broken shaft doesn't do bookoo damage!

If you're on the fence or have been putting off, I hope this helps you make a decision.

Insanity, replacing the transmission is so much easier, oh and the passenger O2 sensor and exhaust lines. Piece of cake.

You'll find that most of us here, when greasing the u-joints, look for grease to ooze out of all(4) caps on every joint.

The clean freaks (you know who you are) will wipe off the excess. LOL

I prefer to spin dry, usually. (awesome rust proofing) Although I've been known to wipe them off.

luck,greg

LOL! Yup, I went ahead and injected my favorite red grease into all four before I installed it (remember to do this! Don't assume that your rebuilder greased them!) and had black/red sludge everywhere! I put my CSI, er, nitrile gloves on and got some of it off...and then said "screw it". Let physics clean the rest.
