I removed the rod at the white plastic handle linkage. It just pops out. It's held in place by a rubber flange type thing. Just grab the white piece to make sure you don't snap it and pull the rod.
stpe #6. I couldn't pry it out without taking the whole window frame out. It wasn't that big of a job though.
