Default Removing the Steering Box

I'm replacing the steering box in my '97 DI, as it was leaking badly out the bottom of the box.
I've been following the instructions in the RAVE, but run into a snag.

I can't seem to get the steering wheel u-joint to separate from the input shaft on the steering box. I slides a little back and forth, but won't come off. I removed the pinch bolt entirely, and looked for a circlip or something on the end of the shaft, but didn't find one. I've yanked on it pretty good, and tried a pickle fork, but nothing works. Do I need to find a way to spread apart the end of the u-joint? Is there something I'm missing? I re-read the manual, and I haven't missed a step so far...

Thanks!
Ben

Default Got it...

Removed the pinch bolt from the top part of the u-joint, and was able to pull the steering gear out, nice and easy.

Once I had it out, I was able to pull the u-joint off the gear box with a little effort.

Cleaned everything up, put the new unit in, and I was off and running again! Only this time, with a bit more directional control

Glad to hear you were able to resolve it. I have a 97 Disco also. They can be a bit difficult at times. Makes you want to smack it good.
