Unhappy Replaces U Joints - Now Clicking

I had the Infamous Cricket Chirp on my 2004 LR Discovery II. I Did some research on this forum and narrowed it down to a failed U joint.

Took the front drive shaft off, disassembled all the OLD Ujoints and sure enough found the failed Ujoint. I put 3 brand new u joints on and reassembled the drive shaft. I made sure they where greased and reinstalled it w/ 8 bolts back on the LR.

I took it for a test drive and now I hear clicking when I Accelerate . Any thought or suggestions on what went wrong?

I have a family road trip planned in less the a week and was hoping i can get it fixed before then. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in Advance

Since you say you replaced 3 u-joints I'm assuming you mean the front propshaft. Did you also replace the centering ball in the double cardan end?
Have you raised the vehicle on jack stands and turned the wheels by hand to see if you can recreate and locate the noise?

You are correct, it was the front propshaft. No I did not replace the centering ball as it looked ok. Should I have replaced it? Do I need to have all 4 tires up to try and recreate the noise? Do I need to test with the 4wd shifter as well? Thanks for the quick reply

You did not change the centering ball, that is your noise. It has to be replaced or you will have an alignment issue with those two joints.

Yes, you can't really tell just by looking.

I'd start the easiest way, one front wheel off the ground, transfer case in neutral so you isolate from the rest of the drivetrain, then rotate the wheel by hand and see if you hear the clicking. With the wheels straight forward doesn't recreate the clicking, try with it to the right and/or left. If still nothing, try the other side. If still nothing engage the transfer case and put the transmission in neutral and try, etc.
If you still can't it may be that whatever is clicking needs to be under load so if you can safely do it put it on 4 jack stands, start the engine and put it in gear. If you can't do it safely, then you can take it to some place that can do it on a lift.

All that said, I'd replace the center ball and see if the problem goes away, since you really should replace it even if it's not the noise. It might not fix it, but it might and save you the diagnostics time.

just out of curiosity when you did the drive shaft, did you happen to take out the little bolt out in the middle of the shaft that replaces a grease fitting. could you maybe have put a actual grease fitting in to replace of it and leave it there instead putting that little bolt back.
