Default Rocker arm shim question

03/D2
Ok, bolted on rebuilt heads and torqued to 15 ft.lbs then/90/90 degree and torqued my rocker assemblies to 28 ft.lbs. Now reading the write up above, I need to set my valve lash using top of lifter piston to bottom of clip 20-50 thousandths. So I made a gauge from welding rod 20-30 and another 50-60 and tested at off lobe 180 degree. I am getting another 30, 40 or 50 thousandths slack so, I'm guessing these heads have been milled ALOT. Now I need to get shim stock to shim up. First I need to make more welding rod gauges at 70, 80 and up to determine exactly what I need and then do the averages if I can figure it out. Does this seem like an excessive amount of slack/gap? Does everyone check their lash like this? I'm figuring the valves will open too much unless I shim up the rocker posts? Where do I get shim stock and is it necessary?

Not necessary. The hydraulic lifters will stay pushed down the 5 or so thousandths they milled the heads down. That's their job. But are you saying the pushrods are lose? Like you have 50 thousands play in the pushrods?

No, the pushrods aren't loose and don't have any play. I was reading the writeup form RPi and just checking the clearance from the top of lifter piston to clip that holds the piston in and mine is more than 60 thou by maybe 20 to 30 thou while off lobe. I was reading the tolerance was 20 to 50 thou from top of piston to clip. So just wondering if I should shim? It would make my life much better if I didn't have to try to make shims, having to drill the shims for the oil holes and all.

If it is not tapping or ticking then.. You are OK.
As long as the lifter is not fully pushed in and distended.

You should be totally fine. I have used heads that looked like potato chips, and had a LOT of material removed to make straight and never had a problem with the valve train.

Nice, thanks for the help! I'll start putting it back together. I really didn't want to go through cutting all those shims and drilling for bolts and oil holes unless it was absolutely necessary.
