rover trouble AGAIN

Unhappy rover trouble AGAIN

I'm new to this. Anyway MY 2000 LR DSII, day before yesterday started while i was parked idling it made a noise like it was gonna die, then it it returned to 'NOrmal" anyway later that day it would not start until after several attempts. BAsically after thinking low on gas, fuel filter/pump, ...ruled that out because what it done yesterday is fire right up, run for approx 5 miles then when stopped at red light it died it did same thing nite before and had to wait approximately 10-15 minutes and she fires back up. I called 3 mech's yesterday 3 different "phone" diagnosis 1) 1 of 3 sensors 2) security system 3) something about cleaning throttle body/butterfly! Basically this could not have happened at worst time-unemployed, broke blah, blah. I'm just hoping maybe its something i could fix--to me it def. appears to be misfiring.
Please any suggestions useful. I bought this rover off craiglist 5 mths ago and what a mess. HAs only 130,000mi

Why are you guessing and making others guess over the phone/net? Go to Autozone or any other car parts store and use their code reader... Google the code definitions... Then you will know if it is something you can fix or not.

BTW broke and unemployed is no time to be starting an affair with a high maintenance woman or a Land Rover...

Sounds like CKP. Typical crank position sensor symptoms are good cold starts but wont start when hot (needs to cool down first).

That was going to be my first guess. Just had that happen with one of our D2's. Replaced the sensor, no problems since. Sensor will run about $50 or $60.

Also, cleaning the throttle body is pretty easy and cheap. Just get some carb cleaner at the store, spray it in and use an old toothbrush to clean the black gunk off. This should be done every once in a while, anyway. A can of cleaner only costs a couple of bucks.

The engine needs three things to run - spark, fuel, air.

Weird spark problems seem to usually be CPS. Could also be time for a tune up, but only if it's been several years would it cause these problems IMO.

Mine recently wouldn't start, turned out to be fuel pump relay. I just swapped it with the winshield wiper relay next to it and both continue to work fine.

It could concievably be an intermittant but large vacuum leak, but that's pretty damn unlikely.

You DO need to go to Autozone and get the codes pulled. Is the Check Engine Light on?

I honestly hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you don't have a bit of spare change and time to work on it, the D2 may not be the truck for you. All the awesomeness comes with a cost.

Crank position sensor won't cause misfires, they usually just stop the engine from running. I say check the sensor and replace if found to be faulty

The cheap test is to run engine at home until warm, or drive around and park at home, simulating the drive to a warm engine no-restart problem. So while it is dead in your driveway, you know it will re-start when cooled off. During this "problem time" you can attach a spare spark plug and lay on the manifold. Try to crank, check for sparks. If no spark, the CKP sensor is suspect. You can speed up the cool down by pouring ice water on the sensor.

So you have tested for almost nothing and avoided a wrecker.

Depending on when the sensor fails it may or may not set a code. Replacing the $70 sensor is tight, draw a picture of how the bolts and spacers come off, and put them back exactly. Plug in and let it hang down before trying to re-mount.

Pull the codes with a scanner.

Scanner can't figure out the P code?

Put the codes into

Like P0104
or such.

CKP failure does not always set a code.
