I told a local disco owner I'd help him swap in some new oxygen sensors to cure his code - got the truck here and there was flexible pipe clamped in where the cats should have been. Poor guy bought it that way and had no idea they were gone.

Sorry to hear that- yeah the check engine light will stay on because the downstream oxygen sensors (which are only present to tell if the cats are working) will always be throwing codes. But mechanically/technically you can run it.

So sorry to hear this
I bought a Stainless set off CATS off Ebay. They did not fit. I tried to send them back but the company said I was SOL because I tried to install them on an SE7. They said the only fit the SE (Wait what?!). I paid to have a local muffler company to get them to fit. Sad thing is I left a bad review on EBAY and the company got it deleted. Learned my lesson about EBAY reviews that is for sure

And won't work in some states even of the CEL is not lit. Here in NJ, they still check under the car or truck with a camera to see if the cats are there.

14wks?!!

Let us know how it sounds once you have the new one on. My cats are looking a little rusty, I'll probably have to do the same to mine as well.
