Default Second Transmission failure

I have a Disco 2 2003 with 200,000 on the clock and about 10k ago I changed the transmission for a 92K unit, it then failed within 2k! I pulled onto my driveway all fine went to use the truck next day and had no forward or reverse movement. Fine, I found a another used unit from Will Tillery with 60k on it and now that unit has failed in the same way.
Has anyone seen this before, the car did smell hot after a long drive last week but it was over 90f so I ignored that as usual. Is it possible that the trans cooler is blocked and this has caused trans to fail? Would that be the hot smell?
Really need help guys.

When you say transmission are you refering to the autobox or the transfer box? Presumably to the autobox as you refer to the oil cooler system. Are you filling the ATF correctly per the RAVE manual? as it seems extraordinary for two units to toast with relatively low mileage on them. It sounds like the oil is underfilled or the cooler isn't working or the filter is blocked. The ZF box is normally very reliable if treated well and oil serviced regularly (30K max) which is why I suspect there is something else coming into play here. Is the XYZ switch set up correctly and matching the selected gears and all the box temperature sensors working OK?

I've towed 3 tons of excavator with buckets plus other junk in 40C temperatures for 8 hours at 80mph and although the truck got a bit....... eerrrr..........warm it never failed in any respect. Mind you the trailer tyres were red hot and wheel bearing grease was melting (it was twin axle tilt covered 2.5 ton car transporter madness) when we stopped at the motorway services but I told the wife that's normal

I would replace the transmission cooler which sits in front of the radiator.
I would make sure the air conditioning condenser is clean and air goes thru it.
I would replace the fan clutch mechanism to pull more air through.

I would only put Amzoil Synthetic in the transmission.

I would never tow.

I also would check to see if the fluid is full with the engine running

I did fill as per Rave manual but I have not yet checked the level on the Auto box.

Do check the level on the autobox with the engine running on tickover and cycle the autobox slowly through the gears which permits/ensures distribution in the internal valves etc (make sure it's on axle stands or the wheels securely chocked with the handbrake on, I don't wanna read about you in the press) Also ensure there's flow through the ATF oil cooler (I believe there may be a non return valve that may just be blocked but be careful ATF gets real hot )

When I did my transmission, I had the truck in Park.
I had the engine running.
I crawled under, opened the transmission filler port and put in maybe a quart or more, maybe even two more quarts.
That's how much of a difference there is.

Of course, with the engine running there is a small chance a kid or thief will jump in there and run you over.

I did this in a parking lot and it was not too fun thinking about getting run over from a freak occurrence.

I did not have the wheels chocked either. Did not have all this luxury stuff.
