Here is another reason Discovery II is left for dead the rise of...

2006 Land Rover LR3

Discovery III becoming cheaper by some dealers who decide not to rip off.

I rescued a 2002 from Illinois, really rusty underneath but the desert has dried it out enough to carry on. Another 2003 from New Jersey has stopped rusting after a good wash, but it has enough rust on it to inhibit oxygen from reaching the metal.

I've got a 1998 D1 from Arizona with virtually no rust, and a 2000 from California that is clean, but the solar radiation has broken a few bits down, and the glass is pitted from blowing sand.

All in all, the fleet stands ready at all times, two are driven daily and two are in the stable ready for rescue, reconaissance, resupply, or revenge.

I have achieved a level of reliability that has me a respite so I can devote my time and energy toward that piece of shiot Eldorado I never should have bought. The only bright side is that the junkyards are full of Cadillacs, while most of the Discos are still on the town.

I see about 5 a day here in Albuquerque, with more kids driving them, including 2 of my kids.

As we all know, once you drive a Disco, it's almost impossible to drive anything else.
I tried with the Eldorado, with its 300 horsepower, and Bose sound system.

I'm such a fool.

My Dad is in Las Cruces. Before I started working on my Discovery he would ask why I liked it so much that I would dump money into it. Well, almost 8 years later after buying a new Honda Accord, he asked me to prepare a D2 for him as a second car. He ended up with a 2003.

He called me 2 weeks ago and told me he is selling his Honda back to the dealer and keeping the 03' as his daily driver, who would have thought!

And there are tons of D1s and D2s driving around here in CA. The biggest issue I see is rust on the D1 Alpine windows.

Couldn't this apply to any car that is no longer produced? They are are slowly fading away.

It happens to all cars once they haven't been made for 10+ years. Here in Florida salt is not an issue. Most cars come to an end here because of an accident or a repair that is to costly to justify a repair, like a transmission or head gasket going out on a 20 year old car.
